IT makes an important contribution to the society: it leads to productivity increase, it is an important factor for economic growth, it contributes to research and development, and it provides solutions to social problems. But how does The Netherlands compare to other countries in the European Union? What progress has been made during the last few years in the area of education, research and application?

We propose to compare the Netherlands with Ireland. By looking at Ireland as an example how IT is used as an innovation enabler we can look at where the Netherlands stands at this moment. What are the areas the Netherlands can learn from Ireland ? We have chosen Ireland because of the presence of a lot of IT-related companies. Beside the fact that Ireland has a favorable tax climate, it has also introduced numerous other measures to ensure that Ireland is a good choice for investment and for establishing a company. For example by creating favorable climate for research and development and the presence of highly skilled people.

Research question
The research question is: How can Dutch companies improve their use of IT as enabler of innovation in such a way that it makes a contribution to a knowledge-based economy.

Sub-questions:
  1. How does Ireland ensure IT as innovation enabler is used to its upmost potential in such a way that it contributes to a knowledge-based economy.
  2. What has Ireland done to create a favorable climate for innovative IT-related companies.
  3. What is the policy of Ireland to develop skills, to exploit and further expand in the field of education and science.
  4. What are the differences between Ireland and the Netherlands concerning current policies on IT.
